Art for Pet Sake and CARE Raffle at Pittsboro Street Fair
Saturday, October 27, 2001, 10AM-5PM
Hanks Street, Pittsboro, NC

CARE was at booths 104 and 105, behind the PTA Thrift Shop
Chatham Animal Rescue and Education (C.A.R.E.) participated enthusiastically in the Pittsboro Street Fair on October 27. Although the weather was absolutely arctic, many people braved the cold to attend and to volunteer. Hooray! This year we had TWO side-by-side booths, staffed by CARE board members and volunteers. The booths provided both information and an "art gallery" which sold donated works of art as a fundraising event for rescued animals. Additionally, in the weeks before the Street Fair, CARE members were out in force selling raffle tickets, another fundraising effort, for prizes at the Street Fair. The drawing was held at 4 PM at the Street Fair, lucky raffle ticket purchasers won either a television, a DVD player, a bicycle, a certificate for cleaning services or a certificate for hair care.

Our first booth offered information on Chatham Animal Rescue and its activities, as well as educational materials on animal welfare, low-cost spay and neuter, etc. We actively sought new members and did recruitment for more foster homes - we always need more good foster homes! The booth stayed busy as folks stopped by to ask animal advice and share animal stories, which we love to hear.

CARE board members Melisa Semenov, Katie Wasileski, Kathy Dorsey, Holly Stafford, Karen Pool, Deborah Kuehne and Michael McCormick , as well as CARE volunteers Pam Sullivan, Frances Haman, Brian and Tammy Pittman, Stella Waugh, Knox Tate, Brett Stafford, Sharon Holtz, Toni Thames and John Daffler helped set up and staff the booths.

Our second booth was our "store", and included our art gallery "Art for Pet Sake". Artworks, all with animal themes and all donated to Chatham Animal Rescue, included ceramics, watercolors, prints, carved gourds, dreamcatchers, Cat Angel folk art carvings, hand-painted Christmas tree ornaments, hand-made stuffed animals, and our first Chatham Animal Rescue calendar. Pittsboro artist Shannon Bueker (919-542-0136) contributed her wonderful watercolors for the Chatham Animal Rescue calendar for 2002. Printing of the calendar was sponsored by a number of local businesses. C.A.R.E. t-shirts with a Shannon Buecker print, as well as animal treats, leashes, etc., (donated by CARE members) were sold.

Local business people Katherine Mills of New Horizons Trading Company, Susan Brookshire, and Sarah Pankow organized a dog show, held on the lawn of French Connection Antiques, to benefit Chatham Animal Rescue! This was their idea, and we were thrilled to be the recipients of their good work.! Delightfully fun and creative categories were offered, including Best Costume, Best Trick, Pet/Guardian Look-alike, Best rescue, and many others. Dogs and their guardians turned out in their fall finest, and it was a grand time with many laughs.

The Street Fair was a great success for us this year, with all proceeds going directly to the care of rescued dogs and cats.
